Psychotherapy begins with an initial consultation, usually conducted over one or two 50 minute sessions, in which we can explore how I may be able to help you at this time.

What can I expect?

The aim of the consultation is to give us an opportunity to explore what you want to gain from therapy and ask any questions you may have. I will explain how I work and outline what you can expect from psychotherapy, including recommendations for which support may be most helpful to you. There is no obligation to commit to further sessions unless you would like to.

Finding the right therapy & therapist

The relationship between the client and psychotherapist is an important one, and often determines how successful the therapy will be. The consultation is an opportunity for you to explore whether you would like to work with me, and whether I offer the type of therapy you are looking for. All therapists and therapies can feel very different, and the initial consultation gives you the opportunity to get an understanding and real experience of what it feels like talking with me, and of how the therapy sessions work.

Starting Therapy

If, at the end of the consultation, we decide to continue to work together, we will agree a time and day to meet for weekly or twice-weekly sessions. The sessions usually take place at the same time and day each week, and this regularity provides a dedicated space for us to work together on helping you to achieve your goals and work through your difficulties. Psychotherapy requires a commitment to reserving and protecting this time each week, for the therapy to be fully effective. Our sessions will continue at this same time each week for as long as you would like them to.
